Restaurant website accessibility: menus, ordering and reservations

Restaurant sites have a few recurring problem areas. Fixing them helps guests who use screen readers, magnification or keyboards, and it often helps your search ranking too.

Top fixes

  1. Menus as text, not images or scanned PDFs. See accessible menus and PDFs.
  2. Opening hours and address as text, not only inside a map or image.
  3. Reservation and ordering widgets: test them with a keyboard. If a third-party widget fails, offer a phone number and email alongside it.
  4. Photos of dishes: short, appetising alt text. Decorative background photos get empty alt.
  5. Contrast on text over food photography: add an overlay.
  6. Allergen information in text, with clear headings.
  7. Pop-ups (newsletters, cookie banners) must be closable with the keyboard and must not cover focused elements.

Platform tips

Many restaurants use Squarespace, Wix or WordPress; our platform guides show where each setting lives.
